BRINGING UP BABY

Training a Foal to FEI

YOUNG HORSE VS RIDING HORSE

Lets start this series with the big question. Why buy a young horse (foal - three yrs old) instead of one that is started under saddle? The shocking answer is most. people. should. not.

Purchasing a young horse is a great responsibility and risk. Sure that baby is just too cute & cuddly. Who can resist kissing a fuzzy foal nose? Not me! But I also can’t emphasize how fast that cute baby can become a dangerous monster without correct(ive) upbringing. Every interaction consists of strict rules and you need to be ready with praise or discipline at a moment’s notice... “No, you can’t nibble on my sleeve” “Yes, you can stand quietly next to me while I brush you everywhere” Anything else will only confuse a young horse and eventually will lead to bad (dangerous) behavior.

Many people think that purchasing a young horse (weanling, yearling, etc) instead of a horse under saddle is an economical way to afford the sport horse. It is.. if you are planning to pay over time instead of up front. When you add up care and training a baby that was bought for thousands less than a riding horse of comparable talent/bloodlines is going to cost just as much as the riding horse. Don’t think you are going to be saving money with the baby. It’s just a matter of paying over time and gambling on the outcome or paying upfront and knowing what you have at the start.

Me? I love a good gamble, have experience in bringing along a baby, and am in it for the long ride. Hopefully you will stay with us and come along for the ride too!

Meet Gryffindor...

2020 at VSP Dressage began with the purchase of this adorable 9 month old Friesian Sporthorse. He is by the friesian stallion Tjalbert 460 out of a friesian-andalusian cross mare named Ellie. Standing 15 hands at 8 months old Gryffin is going to be a big boy. He is very upright moving with a body that screams future FEI dressage horse.

This blog, and the accompanying Youtube channel, will follow Michelle’s training and development of Gryffin.
